Dating as an OFW: making long distance work

More than two million Filipinos work overseas. Many of them are looking for love, and many of the people waiting at home are too. Long distance is hard, but it is not hopeless.

Meeting someone while you are abroad

Dating while on contract has an obvious problem: the person you meet is either far away from you now, or will be when your contract continues. Be honest about it from the start. Put it in your profile. On Liyag, OFW is an occupation option, so the people who see you know the situation before they like you.

Say clearly where you are, how long your contract runs, and when you expect to be home. The right person will take that into account. The wrong one will be filtered out early, which saves you both time.

Living across time zones

The Philippines runs on UTC+8, and the difference to where you are working shapes the whole relationship:

Where you workTime compared with Manila
Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, MalaysiaSame time
Japan, South Korea1 hour ahead
United Arab Emirates, Oman4 hours behind
Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait5 hours behind
United Kingdom7 to 8 hours behind
US West Coast15 to 16 hours behind

Find the overlap you can protect, even if it is only twenty minutes, and treat it like a date. A regular time beats a long call whenever it happens to fit.

Communication that keeps you close

  • Small and often beats long and rare. A photo of your lunch, a voice note on the way to work. The point is being part of each other's ordinary day.
  • Share the boring parts. Your shift, your roommates, the grocery prices. Intimacy is built from details.
  • Do things together, apart. Watch the same film on a call, cook the same ulam, play an online game.
  • Agree what happens when one of you is unreachable. Seafarers in particular can go days without good internet. A simple "if you don't hear from me, it's the ship" ends a lot of worry.

Money, padala and boundaries

Money is part of OFW life, and it can quietly strain a new relationship. A few rules protect both of you:

  • Do not send money to someone you have not met in person. Real feelings can wait for a homecoming.
  • Be wary of anyone who mentions money problems early, especially if they also avoid video calls. Scammers know OFWs have income, and they borrow the OFW story too. See how to spot a romance scam.
  • Once you are a couple, talk about money openly: your obligations to family, your savings goals, what each of you expects.

Planning homecomings

  • Meet early in your vacation, not on your last weekend, so there is time for a second and third date.
  • Keep the first meeting simple and public, exactly as you would for any first date. See our safety tips.
  • Balance family and partner time. Families wait a long time for a balikbayan. Agree in advance how you will share your weeks.
  • Talk about the next contract. Will you renew? Could one of you move? The conversation is easier on a beach in Batangas than on a bad video call.

Signs it is working

Long distance is working when you both feel informed rather than anxious, when plans for the next meeting are concrete, and when the hard conversations happen calmly. It is not working if one of you is always waiting, always explaining, or always paying.

Common questions

Can I use Liyag while working abroad?

Yes. Liyag is built for Filipinos in the Philippines and abroad, and OFW is one of the occupation options on your profile.

How often should long-distance couples talk?

There is no right number. A regular, protected time that fits both time zones matters more than long calls.
